Land cover types (AR5)
The main classification in AR5, NIBIO's national land resource map, based on vegetation, natural drainage and human influence. Every square metre of Norway is classified in one of 12 land cover types:
- Agricultural area: fulldyrka jord (fully cultivated land), overflatedyrka jord (surface-cultivated land), innmarksbeite (infield pasture), all with legal protection under jordlova § 9 (the Norwegian Land Act)
- Forest (with forest site quality in 7 classes, from Særs høy, meaning very high, to Impediment, meaning unproductive)
- Bog (areas with a peat layer of at least 30 cm)
- Open land, Glacier, Freshwater, Sea
- Built-up, Transport and communications, Not mapped
The dataset is managed by Norsk institutt for bioøkonomi (NIBIO) and is a mandatory basis for municipal land use planning and agricultural administration. For developers, the land cover type is decisive: cultivated and cultivable land triggers agricultural land protection concerns and can block development without a dispensation, while forest can trigger forestry interests.
