Species of national management interest

Species of national management interest is a management-oriented dataset covering species that hold some form of national status: threatened species (red-listed), responsibility species (species for which Norway has a particular management responsibility), protected species, and alien harmful species. The dataset is distributed by Miljødirektoratet, built on the data flow that The species database has established since 2005, and it covers all relevant species groups.

To safeguard data quality, there are requirements for geographical precision and functional information (breeding area, nursery area and so on). The requirements vary between species groups. Sensitive functional areas for species that are vulnerable to public disclosure are not included. These are held in Sensitive Species Data.

For a developer, the dataset is a mandatory check in zoning planning under naturmangfoldloven (the Nature Diversity Act). The presence of threatened species can trigger hensynssoner (consideration zones), mitigating measures or, in the most extreme case, rezoning. Included in Placepoint's map layer for nature. Update frequency: weekly.
