The species database
Species observations and red list assessments from Artsdatabanken, Norway's national knowledge bank for biodiversity. The dataset contains information about individual observations of Norwegian species, red list categories and alien species. It is supplied to Placepoint by Kartverket, which standardises and publishes a wide range of national map datasets through Geonorge.
For a property developer, species data matters at the zoning stage: a red-listed or alien species can trigger a duty to assess under naturmangfoldloven (the Nature Diversity Act) and a requirement for mitigating measures in a zoning plan. For an estate agent, it is relevant context when a plot or property lies close to natural values that can limit the right to build. The dataset is part of Placepoint's map layer for nature and is read together with Species of national management interest, Sensitive Species Data and NiN mapping units (all distributed via Miljødirektoratet).
Update frequency: Real time.
Updated continuously by Kartverket and becomes visible in Placepoint immediately.
