Building Limits from the Road's Center Line
The Road Act (vegloven) sets general building limits from the road's centre line for all public roads, a legal limit that determines how close to the road you can build without a specific exemption. The dataset comes from Statens vegvesen and its Nasjonal vegdatabank (NVDB, the national road database), and covers europaveg (European route), riksveg (national road), fylkesveg (county road) and kommunal veg (municipal road). Private roads are not included, and municipal regulations that override the Road Act are not reflected in the dataset.
The general building limits in the Road Act, measured from the middle of the road:
- Europaveg: 100 metres
- Riksveg: 50 metres
- Fylkesveg: 50 metres
- Kommunal veg: 15 metres
- Gang- og sykkelveg (footway and cycleway): 15 metres
If the building limit is not set in a reguleringsplan (zoning plan) or in the provisions to the land use element of the municipal master plan, the general limits in the Road Act apply. Tunnels are shown with a building limit even though they physically lie below ground, so you should filter out tunnels here. Statens vegvesen, the county authority or the municipality handles exemption applications from the building limit.
