Historical aerial photos
Aerial photos back to the 1930s where they exist. Activate a year to see the area as it looked that year, and switch between years to date building work, ground works, old road lines, landfill and earlier land use. "Latest imagery" shows the best available capture for the area. The number of years available, and how far back they go, varies by location. Central Oslo has captures from 1937 and Bergen from 1948, while many kommuner start in the 1950s or 1960s. The resolution varies from 0.05 m in recent urban captures to around 0.2 m in post-war captures, and the oldest are black and white with lower geometric accuracy. Use them to see what was there, not to measure boundaries. Urban areas are often photographed every year, the rest of the country through rolling aerial survey every 5 to 10 years, and it normally takes up to a year from the flight to the published year.
The dataset is distributed by Geodata AS, with Kartverket, Geovekst, the kommuner and Avinor (via Norge i Bilder) as the underlying sources.
For a developer, historical aerial photos are useful for checking earlier land use on a site before purchase, for example whether it has been used for landfill, industry or other activity that may have left contaminated ground. Included in Placepoint's map layer for Property.
