Artsdatabanken
Artsdatabanken (the species database) is Norway's national knowledge bank for biological diversity, and the underlying source behind all species observations and red list assessments shown in Placepoint. Artsdatabanken collects and quality assures data on Norwegian species and nature types, runs the Norwegian red list and the alien species list, and publishes Norwegian nature in the nature type system NiN (Natur i Norge). This data flows into Placepoint through Kartverket's distribution services, and is used in the map layers for species of national management interest, sensitive species data and NiN mapping units, among others.
For a property developer, species data is decisive at the zoning stage: red-listed or sensitive species can trigger consideration zones and requirements for mitigating measures under the Nature Diversity Act. For an estate agent or valuer, the same dataset gives an early indication of whether a plot has biological values that can limit the right to build. Artsdatabanken is an independent agency under the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment and is based in Trondheim.
