Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET)

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute is Norway's national meteorological service. It is a government agency under the Ministry of Climate and Environment (Klima- og miljødepartementet). Together with the neighbouring Nordic countries, the institute runs the lightning detection network, which records the time, position and current strength of every lightning strike in the Nordic region. MET supplies Placepoint with lightning strikes from 2001 to the present through the Frost data service, which we fetch from every night.

For a property owner or an insurance company, lightning density is what sets one area apart from another. The inland areas of eastern Norway (Østlandet) have several times as many lightning strikes per km² as the coast in the west and north. The dataset is part of the Risk map layer.
