Miljødirektoratet

Miljødirektoratet is Norway's central authority for nature and pollution management, under the Klima- og miljødepartementet, and supplies a large share of the environmental and natural value data in Placepoint. The agency was formed in 2013 through the merger of Klima- og forurensningsdirektoratet and Direktoratet for naturforvaltning. Today it is the primary source for maps of contaminated land, wastewater facilities, noise mapping, nature types in NiN, species of national management interest and sensitive species data.

For a property developer, data from Miljødirektoratet is often decisive at the assessment stage: a site with registered pollution requires a remediation plan and often mitigating ground works; proximity to prioritised species or selected nature types can trigger consideration zones in reguleringsplaner (zoning plans); and noise levels above the T-1442 limit values can require facade measures for new buildings. Much of the content in the Pollution, Noise and Nature map layers therefore comes from here.

Miljødirektoratet works for a clean and rich environment. Our main tasks are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, manage Norwegian nature and prevent pollution. We are a professionally independent directorate under the Klima- og miljødepartementet.
