Riksantikvaren
Riksantikvaren is the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage and manages the national cultural heritage database Askeladden, which is the authoritative source behind Cultural heritage - Askeladden WMS in Placepoint. The directorate reports to the Ministry of Climate and Environment, is based in Oslo, and holds professional responsibility for preserving and managing Norway's cultural environments and landscapes. Riksantikvaren registers listed buildings, automatically protected cultural heritage sites (anything older than 1537, the Reformation cut-off), cultural environments and world heritage areas.
For a property developer, cultural heritage data is a mandatory check at the zoning stage: an automatically protected heritage site on or below ground can in practice stop development or trigger costly archaeological excavations under section 9 of the Cultural Heritage Act. For a home buyer, a listed building can mean restrictions on changes and maintenance requirements, but also grants and special rights. The cultural heritage layer is part of the map layer for nature.
Riksantikvaren works to preserve and manage Norway's cultural environments and landscapes for future generations. We are the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage and report to the Ministry of Climate and Environment.
