Statens vegvesen

Statens vegvesen is Norway's national agency for roads and road traffic, under the Ministry of Transport. It manages, among other things, the national road database (NVDB), one of the most comprehensive public road data collections in Europe. NVDB is the source that feeds Placepoint with data on road category, authority and speed limit, traffic volume, traffic accidents, bridges, water and sewer assets along roads and classes and constraints for heavy vehicles. The agency is also the authority for building limits from the road's centre line, which set an absolute limit on how close to a public road you may put up a building.

For a developer, the building limit is often a critical premise early in the design phase: depending on the road category (national, county, municipal or private road), the building limit usually varies between 15 and 50 metres. Traffic volume and accident patterns matter both in noise assessments and as market data for retail and commercial buildings. Much of the content in the Transport and communications and risk map layers comes from this source.

Statens vegvesen works to create a smart and connected road transport system for the whole of Norway. We will develop good road systems that everyone can use, where transport does not cause serious harm to people or the environment.
