Loose masses

NGU's loose masses map shows the extent of the loose mass types that cover bedrock: moraine, glacial river deposits, marine clay, river deposits, glacial lake sediments, peat, wind deposits and more. Most of these loose masses were formed during and after the last ice age. Distributed to Placepoint by Geodata AS. The dataset only shows which soil type dominates in the top few metres of the terrain surface. Thicker layers of other soil types may lie deeper and should be verified with actual ground investigations.

For a developer, the loose mass type is one of the most important single variables in a site assessment: bearing capacity, ease of excavation, drainage and the potential risk of quick clay below the marine border are all linked to the dominant soil type. The dataset is also the basis for derived risk layers such as Possibility of marine clay and Radon susceptibility. Read it together with Bedrock, Marine border and NADAG – ground investigations (registered ground investigations). Included in Placepoint's map layer for geology.
