Marine border

The geographical line that marks the highest level the sea reached after the last ice age, a fundamental geological divide that determines where marine sediments (including marine clay and potential quick clay) can be found. The dataset comes from Norges geologiske undersøkelse (NGU), the Geological Survey of Norway, and is distributed to Placepoint by Geodata AS.

Practical consequence: below the marine border, quick clay and marine landslides can occur. Above the marine border, these issues are ruled out. This is essential information in municipal planning and development in parts of the country with a former higher sea level, particularly in Østlandet, in Trøndelag and around some fjord heads. The dataset is also used in groundwater and hydrogeological assessments, because marine clay can limit the extent of aquifers, and water quality below the line can be affected by relict salt water. Read it together with Bedrock, Loose masses, Possibility of marine clay and Quick clay. It is part of the map layer for geology.

Update frequency: monthly.
