Environmental Certifications
Compiled dataset of buildings with third-party verified environmental certification in Norway, from the three major international certification schemes:
BREEAM (BRE Group, United Kingdom)
BREEAM-NOR is Norway's most widely used environmental certification for new builds and major refurbishments, administered by Grønn Byggallianse under licence from the Building Research Establishment (BRE). The certification documents that the project has qualities beyond the building regulations in areas such as energy performance, choice of materials, indoor climate and location. BREEAM is often a requirement from financiers and tenants, particularly for commercial property and under the EU taxonomy.
Svanemerket (Miljømerking Norge)
Svanemerket is the official Nordic ecolabel, managed in Norway by Stiftelsen Miljømerking. The requirements emphasise resource efficiency, lower climate impact, a circular economy without environmental toxins, a good indoor climate and high quality. Svanemerket covers EU taxonomy Annex 1 for new buildings, and is central to sustainability reporting for residential projects.
LEED (US Green Building Council, USA)
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a global certification scheme from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) that is used for individual buildings, whole neighbourhoods, and operation and maintenance. LEED is a design tool with a points-based assessment, and is most visible in Norway at international corporate headquarters and buildings held by American owners. Compared with BREEAM-NOR, LEED is less adapted to Nordic climate and regulatory conditions.
Use in Placepoint
For a property developer or manager, environmental certifications are both a mark of quality and a regulatory document: ESG reporting, EU taxonomy classification and financiers' risk models all use these labels as input data.
