Possibility of marine clay

NGU's modelled overview of where marine clay may potentially be found, either at the surface or beneath other types of loose masses. The dataset is derived from Loose masses and Marine border, and is distributed to Placepoint by Geodata AS.

Marine clay is the class of loose masses that can contain quick clay, the type of clay that loses its bearing capacity completely when disturbed and that often stops Norwegian development or makes it more expensive. The dataset is a broader first assessment than the actual Quick clay layer: it shows where marine clay (and therefore potentially quick clay) may be found, without classifying hazard class or risk. For a developer it is a mandatory first check in all areas below the marine border, and it is used to decide whether a geotechnical survey is needed before you move on to a zoning plan. Included in the map layers for risk and geology.
