Radon probability
The national radon susceptibility map, classified into four categories:
- Particularly high susceptibility: areas with alum shale in the ground.
- High susceptibility: at least 20% of homes are calculated to have radon above 200 Bq/m³ (with 70% statistical confidence).
- Medium to low susceptibility: up to 20% of homes above 200 Bq/m³.
- Uncertain susceptibility: too little data to assign a category.
The dataset builds on indoor air measurements from the national database held by Statens strålevern (NRPA, the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority) and geological data from Norges geologiske undersøkelse (NGU) (bedrock 1:250,000 and loose masses 1:50,000 to 1:1,000,000). The indoor air measurements are used to classify geological units, and this knowledge is transferred to areas without direct measurements. Distributed by Norges vassdrags- og energidirektorat (NVE).
The dataset must not be used to predict radon in individual buildings. The resolution is no better than 1:50,000, and the only reliable knowledge about radon in a specific home is an actual measurement. It is still an important first assessment for municipalities in land-use planning, and for developers who need to assess whether a radon barrier under TEK17 is required.
