Sensitive Species Data
Sensitive Species Data is a database of selected species of birds, mammals and lichens where the exact location (breeding area, nesting area, growing site) is withheld from public view. The reason is that open access can lead to disturbance, persecution or outright destruction. Typical examples are birds of prey with large nests and rare orchid populations.
In Placepoint, the dataset is shown as masked cells of varying size, depending on the species. Some species have such extensive masking that relatively large areas are marked. The exact location can be given through password-protected access to public authorities, contractors and developers with a legitimate interest, and consultancies. Fylkesmannen (the county governor) can grant access for municipalities and others in the county, and Miljødirektoratet can grant access nationally.
For a developer, the dataset is relevant both when assessing a site and when assessing a project: a masked zone can signal that vulnerable values are present that will affect zoning plans and require special handling.
