Road category, authority & speed limit

Classification of Norwegian roads by category, authority and speed limit, from Statens vegvesen's Nasjonal vegdatabank (NVDB), the national road database. The dataset covers three dimensions:

  • Road authority: Statens vegvesen, the fylkeskommune (county authority), the municipality or a private party, that is, who manages the road and handles cases relating to it.
  • Road category: europaveg (European route), riksveg (national road), fylkesveg (county road), kommunal veg (municipal road), privat veg (private road), skogsbilveg (forest road).
  • Registered speed limit.

The road category determines the building line from the road centreline (15 to 100 metres depending on the category), and it is often the first piece of information you need when assessing a site. For developers, the dataset is central to project planning, and for housing developers the speed limit signals the character of an area (60 km/h and above indicates a through route, 30 to 50 km/h indicates a residential or town centre area).
