Protected watercourses
Watercourses protected against hydropower development through Verneplan for vassdrag (the protection plan for watercourses), a legal ranking adopted by the Storting over several decades. In practice, protection means that no licence can be granted for new hydropower development in the watercourse. Other development and activity is not automatically prohibited: ordinary planning and building legislation and national policy guidelines still apply.
The dataset is managed by Norges vassdrags- og energidirektorat (NVE). For a developer, it is relevant to all projects linked to hydropower or watercourses, and as input data for assessing hensynssoner (zones requiring particular consideration) and environmental impact assessments. Included in Placepoint's map layers for water and energy. Related: Watercourses and catchments, Hydropower, Water bodies.
Update frequency: Weekly.
