Map layer: Demographics

The Demographics category shows population composition, income, wealth and education per grunnkrets (basic statistical unit), kommune and county, based on data from Statistisk sentralbyrå (SSB). The layers are useful for market assessments, housing projects, retail location analysis and tenant prospecting where the socio-economic profile is relevant. For deeper analysis with history and comparison tools, use Report: Demographics from the property panel.

The income and wealth figures are based on the Norwegian Tax Administration's annual tax settlement, but SSB aggregates them per grunnkrets before they reach Placepoint. The aggregation level and the current statistics year are stated on Income and Wealth.

Open the category with the Map Layers button in the top right of the map, or with Map layer in the left menu, then select Browse layers. Click the Demographics tile to open the sub-list.

Voting districts: click in the map

About the map layer

Shows voting districts and polling stations in the kommuner. The municipal council or the electoral committee decides the number of voting districts and polling stations. There is normally one polling station per voting district, but the electoral committee can set up extra polling stations where needed. From the 2023 election there is no longer a requirement that the polling station must be physically located inside the voting district.

Update frequency: Weekly.

Income

Average income distributed across the grunnkretser, kommuner and counties. Data from Statistisk sentralbyrå (SSB). Dataset: Income.

Daytime population

About the map layer

Estimated daytime population per grunnkrets.

Update frequency: Annually.

Filtering

The filter has limits on number of residents, number of jobs, daytime population and number of people.

At district level the layer draws Oslo as a commuter city: the inner city lights up during the day, while the outer districts are lower.

If you zoom in on the centre, the contrast is even clearer: the blocks around Vika, Kvadraturen and Oslo S have a daytime population far above the resident population.

Resident population vs. daytime population

The two layers show different sides of "who is here":

LayerQuestion it answersTypical use
Population"Where do people live?"Housing projects, sizing of schools and kindergartens, local services
Daytime population"Where are people during the day?"Retail location, office location, public transport planning, lunch and quick-service catering

The difference is largest in districts with many jobs or many out-commuters: a city centre block can have a low resident population but a high daytime population, while a commuter suburb shows the opposite pattern. Turn both on in Active Layers to see the contrast directly. Combine with travel distance isochrones or Demographics (area) to quantify purchasing power or workforce within 15 minutes.

Tips

  • For a quick demographic overview of a freehand-drawn area, use demographic search in Analyze instead of interpreting the colour layers on the map.
  • Combine Daytime population and Population in the same map view to see the commuting pattern in an area. City centre blocks with a high daytime population and a low resident population are typical office locations.
  • Education Level and Field of education are also available under the Education category.
