Map layer: Noise

The Noise category shows calculated noise levels from road traffic and railways, along with the T-1442 warning zones used in land use planning. The layers are useful when assessing homes and office premises along busy roads, and for finding out whether a planning area is affected by a yellow or red noise zone. Noise zones are a planning consideration that can require noise mitigation as a condition in zoning.

Rail/metro/tram noise

The equivalent calculation for railways, metro and tram. Noise from rail-based traffic has different characteristics from road noise (more impulsive, and with greater variation between day and night), so it is shown in a separate layer. Source: Bane NOR and local public transport companies.

Rail/metro/tram noise

About the map layer

Average Lden noise from railways at a height of 4 metres. Modelled data, showing lines with at least 30,000 trains per year outside the cities (the situation around 2016).

Update frequency: updated manually.

Noise mapping (T-1442)

T-1442 is Miljødirektoratet's guideline for handling noise in land use planning. The layer shows the official warning zones:

  • Yellow zone (Lden 55-65 dB): noise-sensitive buildings should normally not be established without noise mitigation.
  • Red zone (Lden above 65 dB): homes and similar buildings should not be established.

The municipality uses the T-1442 zones as a basis in zoning plans. A planning project within a yellow or red zone must document satisfactory noise levels indoors and in outdoor areas. See guideline T-1442 for the requirements.

Noise mapping (T-1442)

About the map layer

Forecasts for red (Lden>65 dB) and yellow (Lden>55 dB) noise zones along national and county roads, calculated with NorStøy (Nord2000Road) based on traffic data from NVDB.

Update frequency: weekly.

The layer is a collection of five sublayers that you can turn on and off individually, in the same way as in V1:

  • Noise mapping – roads (T-1442)
  • Noise zones – Avinor airports
  • Noise zones – Bane NOR railway network
  • Noise zones – Armed Forces airports
  • Noise zones – Armed Forces shooting & training areas (T-1442)

You can filter each sublayer by noise zone (red or yellow) and municipality in the filter panel.

Tips

  • The noise maps cover calculated noise, not measured noise. For design purposes, you must order a noise analysis from an acoustics consultant.
  • The Pollution category contains the same noise layers: see Pollution for a combined view with air pollution and contaminated ground.
  • Noise zones are not the same as a value discount: many homes in a yellow zone are valued highly because of their central location. Combine this with Property prices for a complete location assessment.
