Idretts-, kultur- og religionsbygg

Idretts-, kultur- og religionsbygg (sports, cultural and religious buildings) is a collective category for buildings that house sport, culture and faith communities: sports halls, swimming pools, riding arenas, cinemas, theatres, museums, libraries, churches, mosques, synagogues and similar. The category is defined in SSB's standard for building types, which is also the classification that matrikkelen uses to sort every building in Norway.

The standard is hierarchical. Main category 6 covers the whole area, and beneath it sit three families:

• Idrettsbygg (61x), sports buildings: sports halls, swimming pools, ice rinks, riding arenas, stands, changing facilities, strength training buildings.
• Kulturbygg (65x), cultural buildings: cinemas, theatres, concert halls, museums, libraries, cultural centres, monuments.
• Religionsbygg (67x), religious buildings: churches, chapels, crematoria, monasteries, mosques, synagogues, other ceremonial buildings.

Each building is given one three-digit code (for example 651 Kino-, teater- og konsertsalsbygg, 671 Kirke), and the code is used in official statistics, property tax valuation, municipal planning and building case processes, and energy labelling. Many of the buildings are also cultural heritage sites and may be protected or listed, which governs what can be changed without permission from Riksantikvaren (the Directorate for Cultural Heritage) or the county authority.

For property development, these buildings matter in two ways. On the one hand, they set a quality mark on a neighbourhood: proximity to a swimming pool, library or sports facility is a measurable attraction for residential buildings, especially for families with children, and counts in living-conditions analyses and the social section of the municipal master plan. On the other hand, municipalities can set order-of-development requirements in a zoning plan stating that sports and local-area facilities must be in place before new homes can be taken into use, which affects the schedule and cost picture in a development project.
