Grocery chains overview

Grocery chains are shops that sell food and everyday goods. Walking distance to a grocery store is one of the most important quality indicators for a residential area, and a developer often needs an overview of what exists in the neighbourhood to assess a planned project or document the local services when selling.

The Norwegian grocery market is concentrated around three large umbrella groups, plus smaller players such as Bunnpris and a few health food and specialist chains:

The market is monitored by Konkurransetilsynet (the Norwegian Competition Authority) through annual reports on the grocery market, and the relationship between the chains and their suppliers is regulated by the act on good business practice in the grocery supply chain, which came into force on 01/01/2021. Statistisk sentralbyrå publishes turnover figures, and Forbrukerrådet (the Norwegian Consumer Council) carries out price comparisons and chain analyses.

For a land developer or housing developer, the chain profile itself is not the main point, the coverage in the area is. A map layer that gathers all grocery stores regardless of chain lets you see coverage, identify blank spots with no shop within a reasonable distance, and assess whether a new project will add or lack this basic infrastructure. Many municipalities require retail analyses in zoning plans, and parking standards for grocery retail are often set out separately in the plan. Grocery stores are typically zoned for retail use under the land use purpose "forretning" (commercial premises) in the Planning and Building Act.

In Placepoint, all grocery stores in Norway are shown as a map layer, so you can quickly measure the distance from a planned development or a property you are considering.
